Professor Stephen Smith – Senior Consultant

Stephen SmithProfessor Stephen Smith – Ph.D, B.A, University of Oxford. Stephen is the author of around 100 publications in refereed journals including Physical Review, Journal of Physics, Proceedings of the Royal Society, Solid State Communications, etc. As the Head of Physics Department at the University of Essex, Stephen ran a very productive Department over a crucial period consolidating the Department’s teaching activities, and developing a link with Carlow Regional Technical College, which was a significant benefit both to Essex and Carlow.

Stephen was also the Assessor in Physics for the UK Quality Assurance Agency which involved visiting several UK Physics departments and assessing the quality of their undergraduate teaching provision. Then, as Dean of the School of Science and Engineering, he was responsible for teaching administration for a large science School. Steve was an External Examiner for the undergraduate Physics Degrees at Royal Holloway, University of London and the University of Bath and was also External Examiner for Ph.D. theses at many institutions including the Universities of Oxford and London. Stephen was also involved as a consultant at the Joint European Torus (JET) project working on the Thomson scattering diagnostic applying his expertise in electromagnetic wave propagation. He is currently collaborating with a research team in Ireland modelling the way in which light propagates in small-volume liquid drops to develop the work’s commercial applications.
