Best Practice in Hazardous Chemical and Spill Control

This course trains personnel to act as emergency responders for leaks or spills of chemicals for the purpose of stopping the leak or spill. It is specifically aimed at ammonia users, but also relates to other chemicals.

On completing this course the participant will/be able to:

• Have a general understanding of chemical-related legal requirements,
• Have an understanding of chemicals’ hazardous properties and characteristics,
• Be able to interpret warning symbols and know how chemicals may behave when released from their containers,
• Know how to obtain hazard and risk information quickly,
• Be able to interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and use them to make emergency documents,
• Review the efficiency of the company’s spill response procedure,
• Have practical skills in assessing and responding to chemical spillages.

• Chemical characteristics & properties,
• Health and environmental effects,
• Safe Working Levels (SWLs),
• Classification of hazardous chemicals,
• Safety Data Sheets (& how to use them),
• Theory of spill response,
• Preparation for a spill,
• Selection & use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),
• Use of emergency spillage equipment,
• Spill response exercise,
• Investigation/reporting of spills,
• Drafting a spill response plan.

Case studies, discussions and interactive, problem-based individual and group training exercises are used to reinforce delegates’ learning.

This course is suitable for anyone involved with EHS, regulatory affairs and emergency response; chemical stores personnel, transporters, users and waste handlers; laboratory personnel; and members of spillage response teams.
