REACH – Registration, Restriction, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals – impacts all manufacturers and importers of chemicals as well as downstream users (e.g. formulators, article producers, end users of chemicals), distributors and retailers in the EU. At its core REACH aims to protect human health and the environment, enhance EU chemical industry competitiveness, and promote alternative methods of dangerous substance assessment. The different types of companies affected have specific compliance responsibilities that need to be understood and managed to ensure legal compliance. The Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, impacts on hazardous product labelling and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information requirements. This course helps delegates to understand the implications of REACH and CLP Regulations for them, understand what actions they need to take (including reclassification of substances and mixtures), and be able to effectively communicate and share correct information with their customers and suppliers.
On completing this course the participant will:
- Understand the registration, assessment, documentation, notification and authorisation processes of REACH & CLP,
- Understand how CLP fits together with REACH and other downstream legislation,
- Understand criteria for substance classification,
- Understand the responsibilities of actors in supply chains and articles suppliers,
- Understand the responsibility of communication through the supply chain (including relabelling and updating of SDS),
- Know where to access additional information sources,
- Have drafted an action plan for implementation in their organisation.
- Overview of main features of REACH, CLP and GHS and their interaction,
- Understanding the role of users in REACH,
- Identifying chemical uses & regulatory obligations under REACH,
- CLP implementation of the GHS and its impact,
- Supply chain communication – up and down stream,
- SVHC and Candidate List responsibilities,
- Commercial considerations & registration numbers,
- Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and exposure scenarios,
- Authorisation / restrictions,
- User obligations and options,
- CLP hazard classes, categories, C&L notification & SDS revision,
- Information sources.
Case studies, discussions and interactive, problem-based individual and group training exercises are used to reinforce delegates’ learning.
This course is suitable for anyone involved with an organisation’s chemicals policy, chemical management or chemical risk assessment.
